Earwax Removal
Excessive or impacted earwax can lead to discomfort, reduced hearing clarity, and potential infections. At Lake Huron Audiology, we provide professional earwax removal performed by our audiologists using safe, effective methods such as mirco-suction, curette or irrigation, with your comfort and safety as our top priority.

Earwax Basics
Earwax (cerumen) is produced inside your ear to help keep your ears clean and remove unwanted dirt and debris. Typically, earwax works its way naturally out of your ears.

It is possible for the body to produce too much earwax, but most of the time impacted earwax happens due to frequent use of hearing aids, hearing protection or improper use of q-tips.

Thankfully, there are many safe techniques we can use to help remove unwanted earwax buildup.
When Is Professional Ear Cleaning Needed?
Professional earwax removal is recommended when excess wax builds up and the ear is unable to clear itself naturally, or when buildup causes discomfort or blocks the ear canal. A blockage may lead to:
-
Itchy ears
-
Temporary hearing loss
-
A blocked or full sensation in the ears
-
Ear pain
-
Dizziness
-
Ear infections
-
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
-
Poor sound quality or feedback for hearing aid users

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, professional ear cleaning can help restore comfort and hearing clarity.
What to Expect During Professional Earwax Removal
Step 1: Preparation
In some cases, we may recommend using oil drops before your appointment to help soften the earwax. You can purchase earwax oil drops at a pharmacy or use plain olive oil, baby oil, or mineral oil. Please do not use oil drops if you have a history of ear injury, ear surgery, ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, or recurring ear infections.

Step 2: Assessment
Your audiologist will begin by examining your ears. Using a video otoscope, we’ll show you the wax buildup and assess the ear canal to determine the safest and most effective removal method.

Step 3: Earwax Removal
Based on your assessment, your audiologist will gently remove the earwax using the most appropriate technique, such as a curette or irrigation. The procedure is performed with care to ensure your comfort throughout.

Step 4: Aftercare Guidance
After treatment, we’ll provide advice on proper ear care at home and share tips to help prevent future wax buildup, keeping your ears healthy and comfortable.
